This week, a news story reignited a long-standing legal dilemma: a theatre company announced the premiere, set for October 26, of a musical titled “Em dic Helena Jubany. Un musical necessari” (“My Name is Helena Jubany. A Necessary Musical”), inspired by the life and death of Helena Jubany, a young librarian who was murdered in Sabadell in 2001. The family immediately responded with a firm rejection, stating that they had never authorized the production, that such a project could interfere with the ongoing investigation, and that they demanded its suspension via formal notice. Shortly afterwards, the Círcol Theatre in Badalona cancelled the show, claiming it was unaware of the play’s content.

On June 27, 2025, the reform approved by Decree-Law 5/2025 of March 25 came into force. This law adopts urgent measures in fiscal matters, personnel expenses, and other administrative areas. It was ratified by Resolution 201/XV of the Parliament of Catalonia and introduced a new 20% tax rate under the Property Transfer Tax (ITP) for the transfer of residential properties when the buyer is a large property holder, and also when an entire residential building is transferred to a natural or legal person.

The short-term rental sector has been in the spotlight of European and Spanish legislators in recent years. Alongside growing concerns about the impact of these rentals on the housing market, there is also the need to curb fraud and improve the transparency of transactions carried out through online platforms. With these aims, a few months ago Royal Decree 1312/2024, of December 23, came into force, establishing the Single Rental Registry and creating the Digital Single Rental Window, key instruments to comply with the new requirements of Regulation (EU) 2024/1028.
