Imagine being on a paradise island enjoying the sun, white sandy beaches, and warm tropical weather. Now, suppose that, without having to do much more than manage an invaluable resource, you can generate million-euros incomes. This is the story of Anguilla, a small Caribbean Island that has experienced an extraordinary economic transformation thanks to the strategic registration of an Internet domain: the .ai domain.

In 1988, when the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority distributed two-letter domains for every country in the world, Anguilla received the now coveted .ai domain. At that time, no one could foresee the exceptional value these two letters would have decades later. Nearly 40 years later, with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), the .ai domain has become a digital goldmine for this Caribbean Island.

The interest of technology companies in adding the .ai suffix to their AI services has led to an explosion in demand for this domain. More and more companies, large and small, are seeking to establish their online presence using the .ai domain to highlight the use of artificial intelligence. From emerging startups to tech giants like Google, Meta, and X (formerly Twitter), everyone is willing to pay high prices for the privilege of using this domain.

This phenomenon has generated a significant source of income for the government of Anguilla. In a remarkable turn of events, investments in .ai domains now represent approximately one-third of the GDP of this small Caribbean Island. What started as a random domain allocation decision has catapulted Anguilla to the forefront of the digital economy.

And at this point, we have to ask ourselves, how do governments generate profits with their domains, and how can we register ours?

The business model is simple yet powerful: each government sets the rates and duration of domains as it sees fit. Anguilla has capitalized on this to generate a steady stream of income from companies seeking to ensure their online presence with the .ai domain. In fact, it is projected that these benefits could reach up to $72 million by 2025, an impressive sum considering it is an island with a population of approximately 16,000 inhabitants.

Integrating Domain Registration in Spain

In the Spanish context, the .es domain represents a valuable and accessible resource that provides a solid online identity for your business. The registration and management process of .es domains is handled by Red.es, the entity responsible for the registration authority of Internet domain names under the top-level domain corresponding to Spain (.es).

Registration Procedure

The registration process for a .es Internet domain is simple and straightforward. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Check the availability of the domain you want to register

Before starting the registration process, it is important to check if the domain name you desire is available. Use the domain search on the Red.es website to verify the availability of the name you are looking for. Make sure the name is not previously assigned, not included in the list of prohibited terms, complies with syntax rules, and is not on the list of reserved terms.

Step 2: Decide what type of domain to request and check if you can request it

There are different types of .es domains you can request, depending on your needs and eligibility. .es domain types include:

1. a) .es: To identify your name, your company, or your project on the Internet.
2. b) .com.es: For any type of activity at a reduced price.
3. c) .nom.es: To identify your name and presence on the Internet.
4. d) .org.es: For organizations, both public and private.

Additionally, there are domains that require prior verification, such as .edu.es and .gob.es, which can only be requested by entities and institutions related to education or research in Spain and by Public Bodies.

Step 3: Choose who to register your domain name with

Once you have decided on the type of domain you want and verified its availability, it is time to choose who will register your domain name. You have two options:

a) Option 1: Register a domain through an Accredited Registrar Agent

Registrar Agents are entities accredited by Red.es that offer competitive prices and a variety of additional services to facilitate the management of your domain. These agents will be responsible for carrying out the necessary procedures with Red.es on your behalf. You can find a list of Accredited Registrar Agents on the Red.es website.

b) Option 2: Register a domain through Dominios.es

If you prefer a more direct management, you can also register your domain through Dominios.es. However, keep in mind that this method only offers domain name registration without added value and at a slightly higher price than Accredited Registrar Agents.

Registration Cost

The cost of registering a .es domain varies depending on the type of domain and the registration period. Here is an overview of the prices for registration and renewal of .es domains:

Domains that are automatically assigned:

–         .es: €33.38

–         .com.es: €14.08

–         .nom.es: €14.08

–         .org.es: €14.08

Domains that require prior verification:

–         .edu.es: €36.51

–         .gob.es: €36.51

It is important to note that these prices include VAT and that registration can be done for periods of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 years, with the possibility of renewal at any time of the year.

In conclusion, registering an Internet domain is a fundamental step to establish a solid online presence for your business in the Spanish market, as well as to ensure the protection of your brand on the Internet at an affordable cost. As we have seen with the case of the Caribbean Island, the strategic importance of protecting and registering both domains and all those intellectual and industrial property rights, such as works, trademarks, trade names, and/or patents, can make the difference between success or failure of your business in an increasingly competitive digital world. In this context, the value of intangible assets, such as Internet domains, can far exceed that of traditional physical assets.
